Ladies’ “Spice Route Gloves” knit in Jamieson’s Shetland Spindrift, by Mary Ann Stephens
Spice Route Gloves with a bit of optional duplicate stitch embroidery on the cuff.
My “Spice Route Gloves” design, knit in 4 shades of Jamieson’s Shetland Spindrift. Finished palm circumference of 8″, so they’re sized to fit average adult female hand.
Five 25g balls of Jamieson’s Shetland Spindrift were used: 2 balls in the (dark) background color, and 1 in each of the other 3 colors.
Colorway #1
2 – 25g balls of A = Shetland Black #101
1 – 25g ball of B = Eucalyptus #794
1 – 25g ball of C = Chartreuse #365
1 – 25g ball of D = Ginger #462
Colorway #2
2 – 25g balls of A = Mulberry #598
1 – 25g ball of B = Chartreuse #365
1 – 25g ball of C = Orchid #547
1 – 25g ball of D = Rouge #563
Compare the cuffs on the two colorways and you’ll see there’s a tiny bit of optional duplicate stitch embroidery done on Colorway #2.
These gloves are switchable, i.e., you can wear either one on either hand. Yet, the motifs are all placed symmetrically on each side. I’ve adjusted for the varying finger widths by sneaking some extra stitches in along the sidelines. So, it’s still important that you make one “right” glove, one “left” glove…*NOT* two of the same!

They are beautiful and the pattern is so evenly knitted every stich seems to be the same size. How do you get the stiches so even? I find it hard when I knit gloves in colorpattern. I like colorway 1 best. What size is the needles and is it circular or short needles?

Thanks for your sweet comments, Anki. I’m glad to know you like them. Here’s some information on the needle sizes, taken directly from the pattern:
Needles: US #1 / 2.5mm, although anything from size #0 US / 2.25mm to #2 US / 2.75mm may be used. Everyone’s tension and hand size will vary, so use whatever needle size
gives YOUR correct gauge &/or glove size. You can use double-pointed needles, one long circular needle with the “magic loop” method or two shorter circular needles.
I did both pairs of mine using one 40″ long circular, in the magic loop method. As far as getting even stitches goes, I can give you two quick tips off the top of my head: #1, take your time; #2, give your gloves a nice bath once they’re done – it will even out all sorts of ills, in the end.
