The “Blizzard of 2013” (the first one, at least) swept in this past Friday, bringing 30+ inches of snow to our area, along with frantic cries of “Ahhhh, what’s your quickest, easiest hat?!?!?” I was tempted to pull out some newspaper and get folding. Nah, that won’t do! Want something reeeeeeally quick? Time to break out the old crochet hook. Add to that some super bulky Hubro, maybe a few scraps of Heilo, if you want to get fancy, and in no time at all – presto – one pretty fine looking chapeau!

I’m sorry but I just don’t understand the stems term you use and no hook size indicated. This is stated to be “easy” and I”m not a beginner but I just don’t understand the instructions. I’d so appreciate an explanation. THank you so much.
To understand the instructions, first, you’ll have to READ the instructions! Clearly, you skipped right past the “Suggested crochet hooks” section on the first page; it reads as follows:
Suggested crochet hooks:
Hat & Trim: One N or P / 10.0 – 11.5mm hook **
Flower: One D or E / 3.25 – 3.5mm hook
**Or, whatever size hook you need to achieve gauge, below
Perhaps you missed the whole first page? Read through it carefully and, if, after careful reading and consideration, you still have some questions, I’ll be happy to help you.
I have pages 1 and 2 but neither have the pattern on, am I missing something please ?
Hi Margaret, Yes, you are missing something. There should be 3 pages in the PDF: The first page is the cover page, with the photo of the hat; the second and third pages have all of the pattern details. I just checked it myself and, when I clicked on the link, all of those items showed up just fine. I know that my computer prompted me to download Adobe updates this week, so could it be that you’re not using the most recent version of Adobe Acrobat? Without their latest version, it’s quite possible that you’d run into reading / downloading difficulties with any PDF.

I just used your pattern with a bit smaller hook and love that there is no seam down the back. Since it is a continuous spiral instead of joining rounds as tou go, I am wondering how you finished off the last round so there isnt a weird jog? Not sure how to word my question. Thanks for any suggestions!
Jen, you worded your question beautifully! In fact, I particularly like that you referred to the “continuous spiral”. Whether we’re talking about crocheting or knitting, often what we call “circular” shaping is, in fact, spiral shaping. While one continuous spiral makes the work flow easier, the definitive beginning and ending points are unavoidable. It’s no different with this hat – although you’re seam-free, you’ll still have some type of jog where you end your spiral. But, you can tug a bit to minimize the last stitch or two; working them in an extra small hook helps, too. Once you weave in your loose end, keeping things a bit taut, the jog shrinks further. For the final touch, working the one, optional round of sc (single crochet) in contrasting color(s) allows you to finish things off just as neatly as you would with a true circle.

I have been given a bunch of worsted weight yarn and am wondering if you have a suggestion as to how many strands of worsted weight to use with this pattern? If you have posted this already and I have missed it, I do apologize.
Hi Jeanie, Thanks for asking such a good question! No, I haven’t mentioned this before, and I’m glad you brought it up. Although I haven’t tried it specifically with this hat, I do know that you can often substitute 2 strands of worsted weight wool held together for 1 strand of bulky wool and that can work out quite nicely. Good idea! Have fun!
Thanks for a great pattern. I used 2 strands of worsted weight in two different colors and an N hook. It worked up great. I did the flower in one color and a second the other color and it really made a nice accent for the hat. My granddaughter will love it.

I am new to hats. I don’t understand the beginning of each round. It says sc, 2 sc and repeat. Is the sc in the next space or the one you have just finished

Glad to hear you’ve gotten into hats – they’re a whole world of fun! “sc, 2sc” means work one single-crochet-stitch into the first space, work two single-crochet-stitches into the second space, work one single-crochet-stitch into the third space, work two single-crochet-stitches into the forth space, etc.
I want to make hats for cancer servivors do you have any easy patterns? Ihave one for a baby hat and I like this one but want to use 4 ply yarn and what size hook

I just found this pattern and cracked up reading all the notes (good answers by the way). It looks perfect and I am going to make this one next week. A friend of mine just requested I make him a beanie before this winter. I think I may make it into a stripe pattern for him since he requested black and/or grey. I’m not too fond of working with black so if I just do a couple rounds of each I think it will turn out pretty nice. I have to find his head measurements, since he said he had a big head, but I am sure I can adjust it with a larger hook or adding more increases. Thank you so much.
